How the topsoil calculator works
The finished soil layer is area times depth. The calculator then increases that geometric volume by the settling and handling allowance entered by the user.
Soil blends vary widely in moisture and organic content. Cubic yards are useful for volume orders; weight should come from the supplier.

Take level readings when grading rather than guessing from the deepest point. Calculate distinct depth zones separately.
Ask whether the quote is screened topsoil, a planting mix or another blend; equal cubic yards can have different settling behaviour.

Does this include compost?
