How the mulch calculator works
Mulch volume is bed area times depth, followed by the allowance you choose. The result is shown in cubic yards and cubic feet.
The calculator does not prescribe depth. Existing material, plant crowns, slopes and the mulch product all affect the practical layer.

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

rectangle = length × width; circle = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² - Bed volume
bed area × mulch depth - Order volume
bed volume × (1 + allowance) - Bag count

Planning choices for mulch calculator

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.
Measure and order mulch
Measure only the planted bed. Break curves into short rectangles or use a known surveyed area.
Bulk mulch may be sold in full or half cubic yards. Bag labels usually state cubic feet; divide total cubic feet by the bag volume and round up.

Does mulch type change cubic yards?
No. A cubic yard is a volume, though products settle and spread differently.
Should I subtract plants?
Usually not for small plants; subtract substantial hardscape or dense established areas if they meaningfully reduce coverage.
Can I convert yards to bags?
Yes, using the cubic-foot volume printed on the specific bag.

Worked example: a 28 ft by 6 ft border
A landscape border is 28 ft by 6 ft at a 3 in finished depth, with 10% extra for uneven edges and a 2 ft³ bag size copied from the label.
