How the roofing shingle calculator works

The calculator multiplies horizontal footprint by the geometric pitch factor to get sloped area, adds the entered allowance, converts area to roofing squares and then to whole bundles.

This works for simple planes. Dormers, hips, valleys, overhangs and different pitches should be measured as separate roof faces.

Formula used for roofing shingle calculator

The calculator keeps the measured quantity separate from any purchase rounding or allowance.

  1. Pitch factor√(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12
  2. Sloped areafootprint × pitch factor
  3. Bundlesarea ÷ 100 × bundles per square, rounded up

These are measurement and ordering choices, not structural specifications or code requirements.

Measure and order roofing shingle

Use roof footprint including overhangs, not conditioned floor area. Confirm pitch on each plane.

Count ridge cap, starter, underlayment, flashing and ventilation separately. Bundle coverage can vary by product line.

Roofing Shingle Calculator questions

  • What is a roofing square?

It is a trade unit equal to exactly 100 square feet of roof area.

  • Are there always three bundles per square?

No. Enter the coverage for the exact shingle product.

  • Does the calculator include ridge cap?

No. Ridge and hip products are linear quantities and should be counted separately.
