How the brick calculator works

The count uses the exposed face plus one mortar joint in each direction to find the area occupied by each brick in the wall.

It assumes one visible wythe and a simple face-area layout. Bond pattern, returns, piers, arches and openings need a layout takeoff.

  • Why does joint thickness matter?

    The joint is part of the repeating wall module, so changing it changes how many bricks fit in each square foot.

  • Does this include mortar?

    No. It counts face bricks only.

  • Should I subtract windows?

    Subtract large openings, then add back the extra cutting and detailing their edges require in a layout allowance.
