How the fence calculator works
Sections are the run divided by maximum spacing, rounded up so spacing never exceeds the limit. An open run needs one more endpoint post than sections; a closed loop does not.
Gate sides, corners, stepped grade and terminal conditions are layout events. Add their extra posts explicitly rather than hiding them in a vague waste percentage.

Measure every run along the fence line. Draw gates, ends and corners before trusting a count.
Maximum spacing is not a structural recommendation. Use the fence system, site conditions and local requirements to choose spacing and footing details.
Fence Calculator questions
Why are there more posts than sections?
An open line of sections needs a post at both ends, so posts equal sections plus one.
Does a gate need extra posts?
Usually gate openings have dedicated posts; enter the extra count from the hardware layout.
Does this calculate pickets?
No. Pickets depend on panel style, picket width and gap.

A fence runs 96 ft with posts no farther than 8 ft apart and two extra posts at a gate.
